About Amy Wilson

For over three decades, Amy Wilson’s love of art, spirituality and her free spirit inspired a successful calligraphy business incorporating drawing, painting and illumination. Wilson’s work has been commissioned by individuals and royalty, from The White House to museums, palaces, and universities.  

Several years ago Wilson visited an exhibit of abstract paintings seeking to understand what had previously been for her an ‘incomprehensible’ art form.  Wandering around the gallery, it surprised her when she actually liked some of the paintings. She had long thought that abstraction, while fulfilling to the artist, offered nothing to the observer. Even liking some of the paintings, Wilson still asked herself, would anyone want to hang one of these paintings in their home and look at it over and over again? And if so, what would the painting do for them and what feelings would it elicit?

Continuing her movement through the exhibition, she stopped abruptly before the angriest painting she had ever seen. Its intensity was so strong it forced her to move away so that she might look at it from a ‘safe’ distance. She was overwhelmed by the pain and anguish coming from the skilled artist’s painting and wondered if this way of painting had given the artist a meaningful reprieve from her agony.

For Wilson, this was a revelation, understanding that an artist’s vibrational energy and emotion might come out in an abstract painting. She wondered if she could infuse in her own paintings her open-heartedness, sense of adventure, intensity of spirit, and contemplative nature. Might her own qualities and experiences translate into paintings to be felt by and inspire others?

Says Wilson, “These paintings are not just the culmination of a journey to abstract painting, but of embracing the process requiring me to be centered, calm, peaceful and contemplative while I am painting. If I do that, the possibility exists for the observer to lose themselves in a painting that might inspire their own journey.”
